Learning to Drive

Before learning to drive you will need your provisional licence, if you have not got one you can apply online using the link to the right.

Learning to drive can be difficult, but lessons should always be enjoyable. Only a fully qualified instructor has the expertise and knowledge to guide you to success. But how do you know if an instructor is fully qualified or not?

This is an easy thing to check for, ask to see the instructor's certificate of registration, which should be placed in the bottom left-hand corner of the windscreen (near to where the tax-disc is). A fully qualified instructor's certificate is a green octagon, a trainee's certificate is a pink triangle.

BEWARE! There are many trainees around, the sad thing is only about 30% of these trainees go on to fully qualify.

By choosing Topmarks you can be assured of receiving top-class tuition as I am qualified well beyond the minimum standard required.

The Driving Instructor

That's me, Mark Osborne. I'm 44 years old, married with 2 children.

Not all driving instructors are the same, some are trainees, some have the minimum qualification required. I decided immediately after qualifying ( 6 years ago now ) that I wanted to be different, better than the rest.

I have passed the Diamond Advanced Special Test and the RoSPA advanced driving test to gold standard ( the highest possible grade ).

My other qualifications include The Diploma in Driving Instruction ( accredited by Middlesex University ) and the City & Guilds Teachers Certificate in Further Education ( C&G 7303 ).

What these qualifications will achieve is enhanced teaching skills, therefore you require fewer lessons. My passrate is well above average with around 95% of my pupils passing at either the 1st or 2nd attempt.

The Learner Car

The car I use is a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 Breeze. It is fitted with dual controls, power steering, electric windows and air-con.

The reason I chose the car is because it is easy and comfortable to drive with just the right balance of power and smoothness.

Fleet/Corporate Driver Training

Driver Safety

Under current Health and Safety legislation, every company has a duty of care to employ or use only competant drivers. Competance is achieved through periodic assessment and training. The law at present stops short of making assessment and training compulsory and it is left to each company to make the arrangements it sees fit.

If an employee driving on company business is held responsible for an accident and is found not to be competant, then the company and individual directors can be held liable. Doing nothing is not an option. Ignorance of the law cannot be used as an excuse. Each company has a responsibilty for the  competence of occupational drivers and is required to comply with statutory requirements.

Consequences of non compliance

Occupational driving is subject to increasing regulation. Penalties for non compliance are now far more severe. Five years ago, if a company was held responsible for a fatality, the fine rarely exceeded £100K. Dept. for Transport figures show each fatality costs over £1.3 million.

The HSE will prosecute individual Directors for violations, including accidents caused by incompetent occupational drivers.

Driver assessment

Assessment is needed to measure the competence of occupational drivers. It can be used as:

Driver training is essential if meaningful improvements in driver safety, performance and economy are to be made. At TopMarks, we design programmes specifically to meet client needs in order that maximum benefit can be gained. Emphasis is placed on sustainable improvement. It would be ideal, where possible to carry out two or three short training sessions rather than the one, with time in between to reflect and practice. The focus of our training is on improving attitude and behaviour, rather than addressing minor flaws in technical ability.

Cost

The cost would vary based on the location, type of course, number of drivers and other variables.

As a guide around £250/day based on a 8 hour day, plus exspenses if overnight accomodation is required.

Testimonials

"I was looking for a driving instructor and a friend of mine recommend Mark Osbourne. Every lesson I had with Mark was highly enjoyable and Mark always took time to explain things in a simple manner. I passed my driving test first time and I owe this to Marks excellent teaching and patient manner. Mark is highly skilled in teaching and gives help and support every step of the way. I highly recommend Mark to anyone who is looking to learn to drive and have a great instructor."
- Arran G, Long Eaton.

"Hi i just thought i would leave a message about my driving lessons with Mark. I found Top Marks School Of Motering in the yellow pages along with many others. Because i was new to the whole driving business i decided to ring around and see which one sounded best. Mark sounded the most proffesional and supportive of all those i rang. He sounded like he was more for helping people learn to drive rather than just take their money of them. My first lesson went well, Mark was patient with me and explained everything in detail. Each lesson is focused on my driving, it is one to one and unlike other driving schools Mark does not let anything intrupt our lessons, he does not stop to take phone calls, and he does not use the car share system, this means that the time you pay for is spent learning to drive, not picking people up or taking 20 minute phone calls. Ive had about 14 lessons now and i am enjoying learning to drive. Although i have made progress i do still make some silly mistakes, however, Mark still continues to be patient and supportive. At the end of each lesson Mark sets objectives to do next lesson, however these do change sometimes depending on weather its someting im good at or not. Im sure ill pass my driving test in no time. If you're eager to learn to drive and you want an instructor which is dedicated to helping you, choose Mark."
- Sarah J, Chaddesden.

"I needed to learn to drive for to help me with my ministry and was recommended Mark by another instructor. I had had some driving lessons when I was 17, but had soon had to give them up in order to save for University. So at the then age of 24, I was a little nervous about beginning driving lessons again. I have to say that I learnt far more in just my first lesson with Mark than I had my previous driving instructor. Mark was always in good time for lessons, and was always helpful and patient. He installed a lot of confidence and I always thoroughly enjoyed my lessons. I passed my test first time with only two minor errors, thanks to Mark’s teaching."
- Rev. Kinch SSC, Long Eaton.

"Having previously been with another company, I have never regretted choosing Mark for a driving instructor. Mark offers a very different approach to both teaching and driving. Not only was I taught to drive to match a high standard, but I enjoyed the conversations of the importance of the many other factors involved such as attitude and technique which are so easily overlooked yet vital. I greatly appreciated the thought he put into structuring every one of lessons so that neither my time nor money was wasted and my skills were developed as fast as possible, whilst also I was picking up so much more than just being able to control a car. Mark puts a new spin on being on the road in such a friendly and comfortable atmosphere that I looked forward to my lessons and now I am competently driving with confidence. I think finding the perfect instructor out of so many is very difficult especially if you're new, but Mark is one in a million!"
-Jennifer A, Alvaston.

"I learnt to drive with Top Marks, Mark was recommended to me by my sister who somehow managed to pass first time. I thought if he could teach her to drive anything was possible. I was learning to drive with Mark for approximately 8 Months and Passed first time. He is a very patient teacher and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to friends / family."
-Luke I, Derby.

"I was eager to find a new Driving Instructor, as the two instructors prior to Mark were not very good the fact they were reasonably cheap attracted me to them, but found this wasn’t always best. I came across Top marks just by browsing on the Internet. I checked out the website and gave mark a call although the cost per hour was slightly more than I expected I was pleased with the reviews given by some of Marks pupils on the website. My first lesson with Mark was highly successful and I had felt I had learnt a lot within the first hour which made those extra few pounds an hour worth it. Mark is a very calm and patient Instructor who explains things very well and is very good at focussing and resolving areas of weakness, which defiantly got me through and gave me the confidence to pass."
- Katie F.

Thankyou to all those that took the trouble to contribute.
